The Board was established in 1971 under the Fisheries Development Act, 1971. The Board functions are to promote the development of the fisheries industry in Singapore and to ensure its long-term sustainability.
The Board is responsible for the development and regulation of the fisheries industry in Singapore. It oversees the licensing of fishing vessels and fish farms and the import and export of fish and fish products.
The Board also manages the country fish stocks and regulates fishing activities to ensure the sustainable use of our fisheries resources. Also, the Board provides assistance and support to the fishing industry, including the provision of training and financial assistance.

The Board comprises a Chairman, a Deputy Chairman, and up to nine other members. The Board is supported by a Secretariat, which is headed by a Director.
The Secretariat is responsible for the day-to-day running of the Board, and for providing secretarial, administrative, and technical support to the Board and its Committees.
The Board meets at least four times a year, and its meetings are open to the public.
