Information Technology Board AJK Careers
Information technology (IT) is using computers to store, retrieve, transmit, and manipulate data, or information, often in the context of a business or other enterprise. It is considered to be a subset of information and communications technology (ICT). An information technology system (IT system) is generally an information system, a communications system or, more specifically speaking, a computer system – including all hardware, software, and peripheral equipment – operated by a limited group of users.
In an efficient IT system, data or information is typically processed, managed, and stored in a central location or repository, so that it can be easily accessed by authorized users. Such systems are designed to support the core business processes of an organization and are typically integrated with other business systems.
The term “information technology” was coined by British academic and businessman Alan Turing in an article published in 1945. It has since become an integral part of many businesses and other organizations and plays a key role in the operations of modern society.
It is used in a variety of ways in different business sectors. For example, it is used to develop and manage websites, process, and store customer data, manage inventory, run financial systems, and provide customer support. It is also used to deliver and enable a wide range of other business services, such as e-commerce, enterprise resource planning (ERP), and business intelligence (BI).
The IT sector is one of the fastest-growing industries in the world, with the global IT market expected to reach US$5.2 trillion by 2022. The IT industry is also a major employer, with over 10 million people employed in the sector globally.
